AWS Comparison

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is an inexpensive solution for running your IT infrastructure… until you start actually using it. Storage, bandwidth, snapshots, VM creep and sub-optimal sizing are among the top issues contributing to the billing surprises.

A number of our customers have found that running their infrastructure on a private cloud is much more cost effective. They are able to allocate resources more effectively, get better performance and know what their bill is going to be every month. A couple of comparisons are below.

File Sharing Website

Our customer runs a file sharing website with a primary web server, database server and development server. They are currently deployed on a Private Cloud Server (24vCPUs, 64G RAM, 6TB Storage) configured as:

  • Web Server (8vCPUs/16GB RAM/2TB Storage)
  • DB Server (8vCPUs/16GB RAM/250GB Storage)
  • Dev Server (4vCPUs/8GB RAM/250GB Storage)
  • 4 Hour Snapshots
  • 4TB/300GB out/in bandwidth
  • Spare Capacity (4-28vCPUs/16GB RAM/~3TB Storage)
  • Total Cost: $430/mo

A comparable configuration on AWS is:

  • Web Server – a1.2xlarge (8vCPUs, 16GB RAM) – $94
  • DB Server – t3.xlarge (8vCPUs, 16GB RAM) – $94
  • Dev Server – t3.large (2vCPUs, 8GB RAM) – $38
  • EBS Storage – 3TB – $136
  • 4TB/300GB out/in bandwidth – $395
  • Daily snapshots (estimate) – $250
  • Total Cost: $1007

With this configuration, we implemented an agent based backup solution at a cost of $194/mo which isn’t available through AWS.

Managed Service Provider

Our customer manages the IT infrastructure for a number of small companies. They have an enterprise cloud setup where they run a number of vms for thier customers. They are currently deployed on an Enterprise Cloud (3 nodes totaling 96vCPUs, 384G RAM, 7.3TB SSD Storage) configured as:

  • 4 Win Servers (4vCPUs, 16GB RAM, 150GB Storage)
  • 18 Win Servers (4vCPUs, 4GB RAM, 100GB Storage)
  • 6 Web Server (4vCPUs/4GB RAM/100GB Storage)
  • 9 Web Server (2vCPUs/2GB RAM/100GB Storage)
  • 8 Linux Servers (2vCPUs/4GB RAM/100GB Storage)
  • 2 DNS Server (1vCPUs/1GB RAM/20GB Storage)
  • 4 Hour Snapshots
  • 5TB/600GB out/in bandwidth
  • Spare Capacity (~50vCPUs/~140GB RAM/~1TB Storage)
  • Total Cost: $2,541/mo

A comparable configuration on AWS is:

  • 4 Win Servers – t3.xlarge – $520
  • 18 Win Servers – t2.xlarge – $2054
  • 6 Web Server – a1.xlarge – $282
  • 9 Web Server – a1.large – $207
  • 8 Linux Servers – a1.large – $184
  • 2 DNS Server – t2.micro – $10
  • EBS Storage – 4.7TB – $470
  • Daily snapshots (estimate) – $410
  • 5TB/600GB out/in bandwidth – $450
  • Total Cost: $4,587/mo

With this configuration, we implemented an agent based backup solution at a cost of $765/mo which isn’t available through AWS.
